A Mother’s Day Treat

Recently our family took advantage of a special offer that Universal Orlando was having for Florida Residents. You could buy a 12-month pass and get 6 months free. I have never seen an offer like this from Universal and absolutely couldn’t say no to it! We have had Disney World passes for years and Universal has a lot to offer our kids at this age so family passes made a great birthday present and made for a fantastic Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day started just like it has every year with the kids serving mom her traditional breakfast in bed and gifting their homemade cards. But how should we spend the rest of this special day? The sun was shining, the day was young and Momma was up for some fun! It was a toss-up between Epcot’s Flower and Garden Fest or using our fairly new Universal passes. In the end, Universal won because we have been to Epcot’s festival on Mother’s Day in years past and it is always crowded. I get it, I too have enjoyed the beautiful topiaries and yummy food during the festival and it makes sense to go on a day celebrating mom, but I wasn’t up for those crowds this year.

But what about lunch? Do we dine somewhere on our way to the park? You surely can’t eat amusement park food for Mother’s Day dinner? Well sure you can! It just so happens that according to Theme Park Insider, Universal Islands of Adventure has Mythos, “#1 Theme Park Restaurant in the World,” for six years in a row. Check out all of the Theme Park Insiders Awards from 2019.

Mythos Restaurant Theme

You will know you are in for a treat as you approach the restaurant which is a cave with mythical Greek figures carved into the rocks and cascading waterfalls. When you step inside the cave you will encounter more carvings of mythical figures including Medusa and her sisters and others, as well as the River Styx which flows through the center of the restaurant.

If you are a fan of Greek Mythology like our family, this dining experience is extra special. Be sure to read the entire concept and creation of the restaurant located inside the drink and dessert menu.

The reason I chose Mythos for my Mother’s Day meal was not that it is the best theme park restaurant in the world, that was an added bonus I was unaware of when I booked my reservation. I wanted to spend the day with the family at the amusement park but I also wanted a nice sit-down lunch.

Making Reservations at Mythos Restaurant

I highly recommend that you take advantage of making a dining reservation at Mythos. Since we were eating there on a weekend and on a holiday, I made sure to book a reservation.

The process is very easy and only takes a couple of minutes and could potentially save you a long wait time. You can either do it through their online reservation portal or by calling the restaurant directly. You can even make reservations for dining at Mythos once you are inside the park.

Mythos Restaurant Menu

Mythos is a full-service restaurant serving a mix of Mediterranean, Asian and American Flare. There are plenty of menu options to make everyone happy but Mythos will also take it easy on your wallet. Not bad for the best theme park restaurant in the world!

The children’s menu, for kids ages 9 and under, currently boasts traditional American cuisine such as chicken tenders, a Mythos burger, and penne pasta with a garlic cream sauce. The meals are very affordable and according to Eden, my 9-year-old, the best pasta ever.

Being at the maximum age for the children’s menu, Eden was still a bit hungry as the portion size didn’t fill her up. Fortunately, she had this giant banana split that is also found on the kid’s meal. Xen, on the other hand, had the Mythos burger which was very impressive in size for a children’s menu offering. In fact, he couldn’t even finish it, but perhaps that is because he also enjoyed the bread and butter we had while we waited for our entrees.

How does it Compare to Disney?

We have been to many full-service restaurants in various amusement parks. Since our kids have grown up with Walt Disney World pretty much in our backyard we have eaten at many of the various restaurants, including Be Our Guest, The Garden Grill, Crystal Palace, and more.

Although there are no character experiences like my kids are used to with the Disney dining experiences, I feel my kids enjoyed it just as much and didn’t miss that aspect of the experience. For a smaller child, I can understand it being a priority having characters stop by as you dine, but you also pay handsomely for a personal visit with the Mouse or Minnie. We even splurged on adult beverages and desserts and it was still less than half the cost of our experiences at the Disney restaurants mentioned above.

In Conclusion

The experience at Mythos on Mother’s Day helped make for an already great day full of fun, family, and love. We were thrilled with the food, service, and ambiance.

One more tip before I end this post. Be sure to take the time to check out the show Poseidon’s Fury, which is steps from Mythos Restaurant. This is such a fun show family where you will be submerged in an epic showdown of the Greek gods. Poseidon’s Fury makes for the perfect pairing with a dining experience at Mythos, the “#1 Theme Park Restaurant in the World.”
