Our family loves playing dress up and not just on Halloween. Any excuse to create themed costumes is a fun day for me. Maybe it is that twin mom thing? Yes, I was the mom that put matching outfits on the kids when they were babies any chance I got. It was just so darn cute!

Long before the kids came along, Mark and I often donned couple themed Halloween costumes. When the twins first Halloween came you bet we were prepared with our first-ever themed family Halloween costume.

Babies First Halloween – Going on a Safari Family Themed Costumes

That family theme tradition has continued over the years. There are just so many fun, creative options when it comes to family costumes. Are you ready for some Halloween costume inspiration?

Dr. Seuss. Every year at our school we celebrate Dr. Seuss for an entire week, one of those days the students are able to dress up as their favorite character from Dr. Seuss. I have seen lots of things and Cat in the Hats, but I have also seen characters from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, The Lorax, Horton Hears a Who, and Green Eggs and Ham.

Thing One and Thing Two

The picture above was from one of these book character dress-up days at school. I surprised the kids and came to school dressed up as Cat in the Hat. All of this was done very last minute because the kids couldn’t decide what they wanted to be.

Thank goodness for Amazon Prime where I bought all of my items. The most expensive part of these costumes were the Thing One and Thing Two Shirts. If you are a super creative type or perhaps own something like a Cricet the shirts may be no big deal for you. The only other things needed were the headband and tutu for Eden and the hairy headband for Xen. For my costume, I wore a black shirt and pants, a red bow tie, white gloves and the classic Dr. Seuss stove-piped hat, all things that were already owned.

Superheroes.
From The Incredibles, Fantastic Four, Justice League to the Avengers, there is no shortage of Superhero themes you could do for a themed family Halloween costumes. The great thing about them is they all have both male and female characters.

Villains.
Perhaps Superheroes aren’t your thing. There are always plenty of villans to choose from as well. As a family we have dressed up as DC villains and last year Eden and I were Disney villains. She was Mal and I was Mal’s mother Malificent.

Although Eden’s costume was store-bought, my costume items were collected straight from my closet, other than the headband that cost me a total of $4 from our local Walmart.

Yeah we are rotten to the core

Disney Themed.
Disney themes are especially great for families with young children. You have everything from Toy Story, dressing up as Woody and Friends. Other great options include Monsters Inc, UP, Wreck-it Ralph, Inside Out, 101 Dalmations and Frozen. Or perhaps you have a family that would be perfect for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. You also have themes like the classic Peter Pan and his Lost Boys. Any Disney movie could really become a possibility for a themed family costume for Halloween. I have only listed a handful of options.

Elsa and Anna

Star Wars.
Okay, I have to say this was one of my personal favorites. I have seen many variations of the Star Wars theme for family costumes. You can really have a lot of fun with this. I have seen family costumes that included a cute R2-D2 or baby BB-8. Heart-meltingly cute!

Luke, Rey, Leia, and Kylo Ren

Television and Movies.
Do you have two young children that perhaps would make an awesome Pebbles and Bam Bam? Then maybe The Flinstones would be a great choice for you. Like Bananas and the color yellow? Maybe a Minions theme would be perfect for your family. Everyone can dress up like various Minions or humans, you could even have someone in a banana costume!

Last year my friends did a fabulous Addams Family themed costume. Mom was Morticia and Dad was Gomez. Their four children dressed as Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch and Grandmama Addams. It was so creative and a little creepy. You could even do more mature themes like Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, or GhostBusters. The world or should I say television is your oyster with the endless themed family costumes in this category.

Books.
I have already mentioned our beloved Dr. Seuss. Other awesome book inspired themed costumes include Where’s Waldo where you can dress up as a family of missing Waldos. Dress up as Max and some of his monsters for costumes inspired from Where the Wild Things Are. Are you a Harry Potter fan? There are so many costume options here with the various characters. You could even include an owl!

Our homemade Sally and Cat in the Hat costumes

Farm Family.
For this cute theme let each of your family members dress up as their favorite barnyard animal.

M&Ms.
For some melt in your mouth not in your hand fun, this M&M themed costume is a very easy budget-friendly option. Different colored t-shirts with a big white felt iron-on M, accessorized with white gloves.

Classic Halloween Characters.
Embrace the classic Halloween monsters by dressing as a family of zombies, monsters, mummies, skeletons, ghosts, or witches.

Decade Costumes. There are two ways to do this fun family costume theme. You could have each person pick a decade and dress up in decade appropriate attire for that chosen decade. You could also pick one particular decade as we did with our Roaring 20’s theme. Either way, it is always fun to dress up like a blast from the past.

Wizard of Oz. I know I could have put this in either the books or movies category, but this classic needs a separate mention. Every year I ask my kids to do this theme and it hasn’t happened just yet.

My dream was to have Eden dress as Dorothy and I would be Glenda the Good Witch. Mark and Xen could be any of her yellow brick road friends including the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. We also have the Wizard, the Wicked Witch of the West, Flying Monkies, and Munchkins. The possibilities are endless! I am not sure why this hasn’t happened yet. Maybe next year?

Alice in Wonderland. Another theme that could fall under either books, movies, or Disney, is another great costume ideas with plenty of classic characters to choose from. You could even theme within a theme and have the beloved tea party scene characters.
