Last night we had a magical time being whisked away on a musical journey with beloved Dr. Seuss characters for Seussical the Musical at our visit to the Orlando Rep.
If you are not familiar with The Orlando Rep, it is a theatre in Orlando, Florida that caters to children’s entertainment. Many schools throughout Central Florida take field trips to see one of their many available shows. I have been on those field trips with my kids, but last night, we just went as a family.
Just like any theatre, they have scheduled shows throughout the year. They also offer Sensory-Friendly performances specially designed for children with autism or other sensory processing disorders. You just have to check their schedule to see when they are offering these special performances.
Seussical the Musical is all about Horton the Elephant who is struggling to protect the Whos from injustice all while sheltering an abandoned egg. The underlying theme being “A person is a person, no matter how small.” There were many other beloved Seuss characters throughout the performance including The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, and the Whos with the adventures spanning from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus.
My children have always had a fondness toward Dr. Seuss and his plethora of characters. Their very first board books were Dr. Seuss “Hop on Pop” and “The Foot Book”. They also had a Seuss themed first birthday party and have chosen to dress up as Seuss characters for school events. I was hoping their love for Dr. Seuss would carry us through because my son, Xen, is not super fond of musicals.
Seussical the Musical exceeded my expectations. It was a colorful, fun performance as are all of the shows at The Orlando Rep. Both kids were engaged during the entire 80-minute performance, laughing and clapping along to the songs. As a parent, I really appreciated not only the entertaining aspect of the show but the themes that were promoted throughout the story about equality and being yourself.
I highly recommend a visit The Orlando Rep Theatre for some Florida Family Fun!
